Zali Cafe Opens with a warm, Middle Eastern Welcome

This neighborhood of ours continually defies description. I believe we are getting to the point where, when it is said that Pererenan is the sleepy neighbor of hipster town Canggu — we will soon need to revise the term sleepy. International, yes. Tasteful, yes. Filled with culinary surprises, yes and YES!

Joseph, the owner of Zali, was born in Lebanon but is a man of the world. Fortunately he has not forgotten his roots as he has brought his country’s food traditions to our lucky little town.

Casual cafe dining at its best

I was fortunate enough to stop in for lunch today. I had lentil spinach soup (subtle yet delicious) with classic unleavened saj bread with za’atar: a truly unique mix of herbs, seeds and spices.

Za’atar (Arabic: زَعْتَر‎, IPA: [ˈzaʕtar]) is a culinary herb or family of herbs. It is also the name of a spice mixture that includes the herb along with toasted sesame seedsdried sumac, often salt, as well as other spices.
