MacGyver-ing the pool lights

The word MacGyver has entered the Oxford dictionary:

make or repair (an object) in an improvised or inventive way, making use of whatever items are at hand.

Origin 1990s: from Angus MacGyver, the lead character in the television series MacGyver (1985–1992), who often made or repaired objects in an improvised way.

More here

I wrote about the MacGyver phenomenon here, when I first discovered that the Balinese building crew knew about the TV show.

As far as the pool goes, we had underwater lights installed less than a year ago, but the rubber seals would come loose. After trying to fix them, unsuccessfully, a new solution needed to be devised. One choice would be to install new lights, but at nearly $85 a light I asked what else can be done. In fact nothing was wrong with the lights: just the seal against the walls.

Pieces of plastic cut from a standard plastic pipe

So for about $12 two guys fashioned pieces of plastic and screwed them to the lights:

Fully MacGyver-ed

The water in the pool needed to be lowered and I guess there’s a cost there in terms of pumping the water from the well, but all in all the solution was implemented for all of the lights, instead of buying one or two new ones.

And even if the guests accidentally kick the lights I’m feeling confident that the Mickey Mouse (alternative slang term) solution will keep on working.

Mickey Mouse or MyGyver, the job is done

I doubt that anyone will even notice it, except readers of this blog. 🙂
